New Hope Elementary School is nestled in the rolling hills of Forsyth County, Georgia. This 148,000 SF, two-story elementary school was designed to accommodate 1,175 students across 74 instructional units. Located on a sloping linear site parallel to Castleberry Road and the Big Creek Greenway, the school captures the vision of community stakeholders by bridging the past and present into a state-of-the-art K-5 learning facility.
The school is terraced into the hillside, offering two distinct entry points. Parents, faculty, and visitors enter on the northern upper level adjacent to the administration suite, ensuring a controlled and secure flow. Meanwhile, buses approach from the south, allowing students to enter on the lower level through a covered courtyard. This arrangement minimizes conflicts between bus and automobile traffic, ensuring safe and efficient pedestrian and vehicular flow during arrivals and departures.
The compact floor plan includes single-story high-volume spaces such as the cafeteria, gymnasium, and administration suite, flanking a central circulation spine. Two-story classroom wings are anchored by a two-story media center, which envelops a protected courtyard space for outdoor learning opportunities. The upper classroom wing on the south façade spans an opening carved from the lower wing, creating a playful ripple effect over the school’s entrance via a covered bridge.
The contemporary exterior features simple, bold forms clad in natural materials. Light, medium, and dark gray brick form the building’s base, complemented by vertical simulated wood siding made of metal panels. Projecting horizontal canopies, sunshades, and angular parapet lines add movement and playfulness to the design. Inside, the themes of natural materials and landscape continue, creating a collaborative and inspiring learning environment. The centrally located two-story media center serves as the heart of the school, with interior window openings and collaboration spaces offering connectivity and natural light. Playful shades of green and blue accent the walls, floors, and ceilings, complemented by natural wood veneers for warmth. Durable stained and polished concrete floors in the cafeteria/auditorium provide a clean and aesthetically pleasing alternative to porcelain tile.
