Architecture & Building Design

We Create Spaces for People to Flourish

One look at our architecture portfolio and it’s clear that our team has experience working across a wide range of sites, with a design process that adapts to scale and purpose. Each commercial project is shaped by specific client objectives, market forces, and site conditions. Regulatory requirements, scale, and operational needs vary, and each environment carries its own context of responsibility.

As commercial architects, our team designs buildings with the creative attributes and performance characteristics required to respond to these realities. This disciplined approach has positioned Smallwood among the most trusted architects for commercial projects nationwide.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Design

We are committed to integrating sustainable architectural design and believe all buildings should be designed to reduce negative environmental impact. Limiting carbon footprint, along with the environmental and cultural impacts of building construction and operation, is a core design goal and vital to protecting quality of life into the future.

As a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Smallwood has played a leadership role in advancing LEED® design principles within the commercial real estate market. Our 171 17TH Street project at Atlantic Station in Atlanta, Georgia, was the first LEED Silver Certified Core and Shell high-rise building in the world. The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte was the first LEED Gold–certified luxury hotel for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, and our design for The Brookwood in Atlanta was the first LEED Certified high-rise residential building in the State of Georgia.

Elevating the Human Experience Through Architecture and Design

Smallwood provides architectural design services for a wide range of commercial and institutional building types. As an experienced firm, the practice works across complex commercial builds where design quality, technical execution, and long-term use must align.

Each project is approached individually, with careful consideration given to regulatory requirements, operational costs and needs, and the specific challenges of that location. This disciplined process supports commercial building design that is durable, adaptable, and responsive to changing market conditions.

Commercial architecture at this scale requires more than just visual clarity. It demands an understanding of how buildings function over time and how they fit within the surrounding community. Smallwood applies this long-term, community aware perspective to deliver commercial buildings that work well today and remain relevant for years to come.
